FAQ

  • Import regulations for katanas vary depending on the country or region.
In many countries, katanas can be imported as decorative or collectible items; however, additional checks may be required depending on blade length, shape, or declared use.
While we provide general guidance based on past experience and common practices, the final decision is made by local customs authorities.
If you have concerns about import regulations in your country, we recommend contacting us before placing your order.

  • All katanas offered in our shop are produced based on traditional katana design and manufacturing principles, including decorative and display pieces.
Each product page clearly states details such as blade structure, materials, finishing, and intended use (display or practical use).
We do not handle unidentified replicas or generic mass-produced industrial products. Only items that meet our quality and authenticity standards as katanas are offered.

Meet the Masters Behind Each Katana

Each blade begins as raw steel and becomes a katana through patient, skilled hands—rooted in time-honored tradition, shaped by decades of experience, and perfected down to the smallest detail.

Master Swordsmith

“A katana is not just a weapon—it is a work of art and a reflection of the maker’s spirit. I forge each blade to achieve a balance of strength, sharpness, and beauty, so that it can be appreciated for generations.”

Traditional Polisher

“Polishing reveals what the forge has created—hamon, steel grain, and the life inside the blade. My work is to bring clarity and elegance to every surface while preserving the katana’s character.”

▼ details Katana Parts

Welcome to Katana info, here are information about the Katana that you need to know !

This section explains the main parts of a katana, using correct traditional terminology and accurate technical descriptions.
Understanding each component helps to better appreciate the craftsmanship, balance, and performance of a katana.

Sori

Sori refers to the curvature of the katana blade. The degree and position of the curvature vary depending on the sword and historical style, and different terms are used according to where the curve is strongest (such as koshi-zori, tori-zori, or saki-zori). The sori affects cutting performance, draw speed, and overall balance.

Shinogi & Shinogi-Ji

The Shinogi is the ridge line that runs along the blade, separating the cutting edge area from the flat surface of the blade. The flat surface above this ridge is called the Shinogi-Ji.
This structure strengthens the blade while maintaining sharpness and reducing unnecessary weight, contributing to both durability and cutting efficiency.

Hamon

The Hamon is the visible temper line formed during the traditional differential hardening process (yaki-ire). By applying clay unevenly to the blade before quenching, the cutting edge cools rapidly and becomes very hard, while the rest of the blade cools more slowly and remains flexible. The resulting hamon is both a functional feature and a key indicator of craftsmanship, significantly influencing a katana’s value.

Boshi

The Boshi is the continuation of the hamon into the tip (Kissaki) of the blade. Its shape and clarity are revealed through careful polishing and are considered just as important as the hamon along the rest of the blade. A well-defined boshi is a key indicator of quality craftsmanship.

Yokote

TThe Yokote is the line that separates the main body of the blade from the kissaki (tip). Most traditional katana feature a clearly defined yokote, though some styles exist where the blade transitions smoothly into the tip without a distinct line.

Kissaki

TThe Kissaki is the tip of the katana. Its size and shape vary depending on the sword (such as ko-kissaki, chu-kissaki, or o-kissaki), influencing both aesthetics and cutting characteristics.

Ha

The Ha is the cutting edge of the katana and the hardest part of the blade. It is responsible for cutting performance and durability. The quality of the ha depends on the steel used, heat treatment, and polishing, all of which affect sharpness, edge retention, and long-term reliability.

BO-HI

The Bo-Hi is a groove carved into the blade to reduce weight and adjust the balance of the katana. Its primary purpose is to improve handling and control. A secondary effect is the sound (tachikaze) produced during a correct cut, which practitioners use as feedback for cutting technique.

Nakago

The Nakago is the tang of the katana that extends into the handle (Tsuka). Although hidden, it is one of the most critical structural elements of the sword. The nakago may bear the smith’s signature (mei) and determines how securely the blade is mounted, ensuring safety and durability during use.

Saya

The Saya is the scabbard of the katana. It is precisely crafted to hold the blade securely while allowing smooth and quick drawing. Traditional saya are typically made of lacquered wood and come in various finishes and colors.

Kurigata & Shiadome

TThe Kurigata is the knob on the saya used to secure the Sageo cord. Shitodome are decorative metal fittings that reinforce the kurigata holes. Together, they provide both functional strength and aesthetic refinement.

Sageo

TThe Sageo is a cord attached to the saya, traditionally used to secure the katana to the wearer’s belt (obi). It comes in various materials and colors and is often chosen to match the handle wrapping.

Habaki & Seppa

The Habaki is a metal collar fitted at the base of the blade that secures the katana within the scabbard and stabilizes the mounting. The Seppa are thin metal spacers placed around the guard (tsuba) to ensure a tight, secure assembly. Together, they maintain proper alignment, reduce movement, and contribute to overall structural stability.

Tsuba

TThe Tsuba is the hand guard of the katana. It protects the hand, prevents it from sliding onto the blade, and helps adjust balance. Historically, tsuba are also highly valued as individual works of art.

Fuchi

The Fuchi is a metal collar at the base of the handle. It reinforces the structure of the tsuka and often features traditional decorative motifs.

Tsuka-Ito

Tsuka-Ito is the cord used to wrap the handle. Different materials and wrapping styles exist, including cotton, silk, leather, and synthetic fibers, each affecting grip and appearance.

Same

TSame refers to ray or shark skin used beneath the tsuka-ito. It provides excellent grip, absorbs shock, and adds structural strength while enhancing aesthetics.

Mekugi

Mekugi are bamboo pegs that secure the blade to the handle by passing through the nakago. They are structurally essential for safe use. Traditionally, one mekugi is used; modern or practical katana may use two for additional security.

Menuki

Menuki are decorative ornaments placed beneath the tsuka-ito. They improve grip ergonomics and serve as traditional decorative elements.

Kashira

The Kashira is the pommel of the katana. Together with the fuchi, it secures the handle assembly and completes the visual balance of the sword.
